Five things people get wrong about Menorca's calas and lost jewellery

Spend an afternoon at Cala Galdana or Cala en Porter and the sea appears almost unreasonably benign. The water sits clear down to the sand, the waves barely disturb the surface, and the fine white sediment gives the impression of a place where nothing could go missing for long. It is precisely this gentleness that encourages a familiar set of assumptions about what happens to jewellery lost in these coves — assumptions that turn out, on closer inspection, to be wrong in ways that matter. What looks like transparency is not the same as legibility, and what looks calm is not the same as predictable.
Clear water and a lost ring are different problems
Menorca's calas have exceptional underwater visibility — at places like Cala Macarella and Cala Pregonda, the bottom of a three-metre cove can appear sharp enough to read from the surface on a still day. The natural conclusion is that a lost ring could simply be spotted by looking. In practice, a plain gold band lying face-down on fine pale sand disappears almost immediately. The colour is near-identical to the seabed, the shadow is absent in the flat, diffuse Mediterranean light, and the object is a few millimetres below the undisturbed surface within seconds of landing. Snorkellers who know approximately where something went in routinely swim directly over it without seeing it. Visibility of twenty-five metres helps enormously with fish and reef; it has almost no bearing on locating a small gold object that blends perfectly with the background at every depth.
Posidonia holds things in place — it doesn't sweep them away
Posidonia oceanica, the seagrass that carpets much of the Menorcan seabed and is largely responsible for the water's clarity, is commonly assumed to complicate recovery — drifting over objects, tangling things, carrying small items along with tidal movement. The reality is nearly the opposite. Posidonia meadows reduce current velocity within them, trap fine sediment from the water column, and stabilise the substrate beneath. Research at Menorcan beaches has shown that removing posidonia banquettes from shorelines like Son Bou and Cala Galdana causes measurable sand loss — an illustration of just how effectively the grass binds seabed material together. A ring that lands near or within a posidonia bed is not being moved by it. The plant is anchoring the sediment, and the ring with it.
Menorca's tidal range is roughly twenty centimetres
On an Atlantic beach, the twice-daily tidal cycle redistributes sand and deposits dense objects in predictable zones. The wet line at low tide is a productive area for metal detecting because the sea has done some of the sorting work. Menorca's situation is quite different. The Mediterranean has minimal tides, and the tidal range at Menorca — the difference between high and low water — is typically fifteen to twenty centimetres. The water moves gently in and out, but it shifts very little sediment. This is significant for anyone waiting to search at a particular state of tide: the strategy works well on Atlantic beaches but does not translate to a Menorcan cala. There is no reliable redistribution window to wait for. Metal detecting Menorca therefore works on a different principle — direct, methodical search of the area where the loss occurred, rather than tidal patience.
Feeling around with your hands is not a search strategy
This assumption is entirely understandable. The sand looks soft, the water is shallow, and the loss seems to have happened in a bounded area. But fine cala sand at a metre or two of depth is more compact below the first few centimetres than its surface texture suggests, and a small dense object like a gold ring sinks quickly into undisturbed sediment — sometimes pushed deeper by the turbulence of nearby swimming and searching. Estimating where something entered the water is also harder than it feels in the moment: you were treading water, looking toward a featureless horizon, surrounded by moving people. Once you are back on the beach trying to reproduce the spot, the reference points look different. In slightly disturbed visibility — the water stirred by understandable panic — hand-searching even a modest area becomes close to impossible. The cool, hard object found under the sand in those conditions is, in most cases, a piece of shell.
A detector handles salt water without difficulty
There is a widespread assumption that metal detecting in the sea requires exotic equipment because salt water interferes with the detector signal. Salt water does affect certain types of machine: a standard VLF detector, which works well on a dry beach, generates false signals when its coil enters seawater because dissolved minerals are mildly conductive. This is why hobbyist detectors struggle in the surf. Pulse-induction detectors — the instruments used for sea and wet-sand ring recovery on Menorca and across the Balearics — are designed specifically for this environment. They reject the mineralisation signal and respond cleanly to metal targets. The sea's salinity is a known, engineered-around problem, not a barrier to recovery. Detecting in two metres of Menorcan seawater is well within the normal operating range of the equipment used for this work.
Undisturbed doesn't mean unreachable
Perhaps the most consequential misconception is that a ring not found on the day it was lost is a ring gone forever. The combination of minimal tidal movement, sediment stabilised by posidonia, and very weak currents in Menorca's enclosed coves means that small dense objects tend to stay close to where they landed. Rings have been recovered from Menorcan calas — including spots near Arenal d'en Castell and Cala en Porter — weeks after they went in, sitting in the sand with very little apparent movement. The recovery window closes not because the ring has drifted away, but because the location information has been lost. A clear note of the beach name, the approximate water depth, the rough distance from shore, and any visible reference point — a distinctive rock, a mooring buoy, a particular angle from the beach entrance — keeps a recovery realistic far longer than most people expect.
